Torn Gym Training Guide

How happy, energy, drugs and gyms actually work — and how to train smart at any stat level. Mechanics here are checked against the Torn wiki and in-game testing; community lore that isn't officially confirmed is flagged as such.

What drives your gym gains

Gym gains in Torn aren't random — a single train follows a known formula. Five things decide how much a train adds to a battle stat:

Happy: the cap and the catch

Happy regenerates up to a personal maximum (your soft cap), but the true ceiling is 99,999. You push above your soft cap with boosters: Ecstasy doubles your current happy, an Erotic DVD adds 2,500, and a Lollipop adds a small amount. Stacking Erotic DVDs and then doubling with Ecstasy is how players reach the big numbers.

The catch — and why "always jump to 99,999" is bad advice — is that happy above your soft cap decays fast. You get a short window to train it off before it falls back. The only way to hold high happy long term is the book "Ignorance Is Bliss," which lets happy regenerate above your maximum for 31 days.

Energy: what you really get per day

Energy regenerates 5 points every 10 minutes with donator (max 150) — about 720/day — or every 15 minutes without it (about 480/day). On top of that you can buy one points refill per day (150 energy) and take energy drugs. That daily ceiling matters: you can't train more than the energy you can actually get.

Xanax vs LSD: the cooldown is everything

Both give energy, but they share one drug cooldown — you can only have one drug active at a time, and the cooldown runs roughly 6–8 hours. So you get about three doses a day, total.

DrugEnergy/dose~3 doses/dayNotes
Xanax250~750+75 happy; the training staple
LSD50~150happy boost, but high overdose risk

Because the cooldown caps you at ~3 doses, the drug with the most energy per dose wins. Even if LSD looks cheaper per point of energy on the market, you can't make up the difference with volume — the cooldown won't let you. So Xanax is the staple; LSD is a budget fallback. Overdosing is punishing: any overdose wipes 100% of your stacked energy (except Vicodin), and a Xanax OD also empties your happy.

A realistic daily baseline most guides converge on: natural regen + 3 Xanax + 1 refill — roughly 1,300–1,600 energy a day, depending on how continuously you train.

Happy jump vs energy training

The question everyone asks. The honest answer is: it depends how big the stat already is. (For the full jump recipe and break-even analysis, see the dedicated happy jump calculator & guide.)

The old 50M cap (and what replaced it): Torn used to have a real stat cap — gym gains went flat once a stat hit 50,000,000. Chedburn removed that cap in 2022. Above 50M, gains no longer flatline; they keep growing but at a steadily decreasing rate. So a bigger stat still earns a bit more per train, just with diminishing returns — meaning simple linear projections of very-high-stat gains tend to run optimistic.

How gyms unlock

There are two kinds, and they unlock very differently.

Standard gyms (Premier Fitness → George's)

These unlock by gym EXP, which is the total energy you've ever spent training — across every gym, your whole career, not just your current one. Not days played, not stats: you unlock them by training. George's (7.3 dots to all stats) is the last and best standard gym.

Specialist gyms

These gate on stat ratios, not gym EXP:

This ratio system is why experienced players "whore" one stat — pushing a single stat far ahead to unlock its specialist gym, which then accelerates that stat even more. See the full Torn specialist gyms requirements for the exact ratios.

Gym-gain modifiers (perks)

Your gym-gain bonus (M) is the sum of percentage bonuses from faction steadfast upgrades, the matching merit, certain education courses, a couple of jobs (some give +10% to specific stats), property, and temporary training books. They add up into a single multiplier applied to every train. A private island and full armour help indirectly (happy and defense), and stacking all of these is how top players squeeze out extra gains.
