Torn Specialist Gyms: Requirements

The exact stat ratios, prerequisites and dots for every specialist gym in Torn — and whether they're worth using. Requirements verified against the Torn wiki, the official forums and in-game tests.

Unlike the standard gyms (which unlock by gym EXP — total energy ever trained), the specialist gyms unlock by stat ratios. They give more dots than George's, so they train their target stat faster for the same energy. Membership is bought once, but access depends on continuing to meet the ratio (more on that below).

The Sports Science Lab (9.0 dots, all stats) and Fight Club (10.0 dots, invite-only) work differently — see below.

Two-stat gyms: Balboas & Frontline

These need Cha Cha's unlocked first, and require the pair of stats they train to be 25% higher than the other pair:

Equivalent rule of thumb: the pair you train must add up to at least 5/9 (about 56%) of your total stats. (If one pair is 1.25× the other, it's automatically 5/9 of the total — the two phrasings are the same.)

Single-stat gyms: Gym 3000, Mr. Isoyamas, Total Rebound & The Elites

These need George's unlocked, and require the stat they train to be 25% higher than your second-highest stat. Each covers one stat: Gym 3000 (Strength), Mr. Isoyamas (Defense), Total Rebound (Speed), The Elites (Dexterity).

What "second-highest" really means: once the stat you're pushing is your highest, your second-highest is just the biggest of your other three. So the real target is 1.25 × the highest of your other three stats.

Example: your other three stats are 40M, 20M and 15M. To unlock The Elites your Dexterity must reach 1.25 × 40M = 50M. At 49M you don't qualify; at 50M you do.

The Sports Science Lab (SSL)

The SSL trains all four stats at a high rate and is the "drug-free" gym. It requires Last Round unlocked and a maximum of 150 Xanax and Ecstasy combined, ever. Most active players blow past 150 of those early, so for them SSL is permanently out of reach.

SSL is one-way. Unlike every other specialist gym, if you ever lose SSL access you can never regain it. Don't take a 151st Xanax/Ecstasy if you're building around it.

Fight Club

Fight Club gives the highest dots in the game (10.0 to every stat) but is invite-only — there's no stat requirement you can train toward. In the API it often shows up unnamed.

Access isn't permanent

You buy membership once, but you keep access only while your stats still meet the ratio. Train the "wrong" stats and your ratio can slip below the requirement, locking you out until you meet it again — you don't pay again, you just need the ratio back. (The SSL exception above is the only one-way door.) This is why players commit to a build: push one stat far ahead and deliberately hold a stat back to keep the ratio.

Are they worth it?

Yes, clearly, for the stat they target. A player's in-game test of 50 energy of Defense:

That's roughly 10% more from the single-stat gym for the same energy — and it compounds over months of training. The trade-off is an unbalanced build, which matters in combat, so it's a strategic choice, not a free win.

The Torn Training Optimizer reads your real stats and tells you which specialist gyms you qualify for, and for the ones you don't, the exact stat and number you need to reach — plus the energy, cost and days to get there. Your API key never leaves your browser.
